Our Pottery Experience Day is a thorough and fun introduction to working with clay. Starting at 10am and finishing at 4pm, this is a full day covering a range of hand-building techniques and is also a chance to get acquainted with the pottery wheel. The day costs £185 and includes a delicious home-cooked two course lunch, as well as other refreshments throughout the day.
We suggest that you arrive approximately 5 minutes before the session is due to begin, so you can meet the tutors and put your bags/coats away. Everything will be provided for you, so you can relax and concentrate on enjoying the day.
After a quick tour of the studio you’ll be shown a variety of different hand building techniques, including slab building and using moulds. You’ll get the chance to make something, such as a mug or vase, which will be a great way to help you get used to handling clay. There’ll be a quick break for refreshments (tea, coffee etc and a selection of biscuits/cakes) and then you’ll explore ways to personalise your work by adding colour and texture.
Following a relaxed two course lunch you will move on to throwing. You’ll be shown the fundamentals of working on the wheel including centring, lifting and turning. Our tutor will demonstrate throwing a cylinder and then you’ll get the chance to try for yourself. After a refreshment break, you’ll be shown how to throw a bowl, and then there’ll be plenty of time for you to really get used to working with clay on the wheel. You’ll be encouraged to keep one or two pieces from this session.
Any work you make, and wish to keep, will be fired and can be picked up at a later stage. Please note that this is a long process and can take up to four weeks to be ready for collection. We are only able to keep finished work for two months due to space restrictions. We will get in touch with you once your work is ready.
Pottery Experience Days are suitable for those aged 15 years and over (please note, however, those who are aged between 15-18 must be accompanied by an adult).
